Bear River High School

Attendance

We welcome this opportunity to develop a strong team effort in working with you regarding your student. Regular attendance is necessary if a student is to have a successful educational experience. All absences, including tardies directly affect a student?s good habits for future employability. Therefore, Bear River High School has established the following:
  1. A student who is absent from class 3-7 days per semester will receive a Letter of Encouragement to attend on a more regular basis.
  2. Upon the next absence subsequent to receiving the Letter of Encouragement, a second letter will be sent and a parent conference may be scheduled and an attendance contract issued.
  3. Upon the next absence after being given the opportunity to participate in a parent conference the student will receive a third letter indicating that they will be referred to the Student Attendance Review Board.
Absences related to school sponsored field trips, athletics, or other school related activities do not apply under this policy.

The Education Code does not allow us to excuse absences for personal reasons. This year we are not processing Independent Study packets for personal absences. Students will work independently with their individual teachers to make up missed assignments. Make up work is at the discretion of the teachers.
A student shall be excused from school only for the following reasons specified in the Education Code:
  1. Illness
  2. Quarantine under direction of a county or city health officer.
  3. Medical services which cannot be reasonably scheduled outside of school hours.
  4. Funeral for a member of the immediate family.
  5. Jury duty.
  6. Exclusion for failure to present evidence or waiver of immunization.
  7. When the student is the custodial parent of a child with a medical appointment.
  8. Justifiable personal reasons as determined by the principal or designee including, but not limited to:
    1. Court appearance.
    2. Religious observance.
    3. Religious retreat.
    4. An employment conference.
    5. College visits not to exceed 3 per year.
    6. "Other" appealed through Principal/Designee.

It is the parent's or guardian's responsibility to ensure the student's regular attendance in school. BRHS has every desire to work with students and parents to this end. Please call the attendance secretary or counselor at 268-3700 with any questions or concerns regarding this policy.

Attendance / Activities

  • Homework can be requested from the nurse’s office on the third day of absence only if the student is unable to get assignments from classmates and will not be returning to school the next day.  Parents/guardians should call before 10:00 a.m.  Homework will be ready to pick up between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. the next day.
  • All routine medical and dental appointments should be made after the end of the school day.
  • In order to participate in co-curricular or extracurricular activities, student must be present in school on the day of the activity.  If the activity occurs on the weekend, the student must be in attendance on that Friday before.  Athletic exceptions must be verified in advance by District Administration.  It is important that students assume responsibility for missing classes.
  • Students are eligible to participate in athletic programs by maintaining a “C” average and good citizenship. An athlete who has an “F” grade in two successive grading periods or two “F” grades in a grading period is ineligible even though he/she may have a 2.0 GPA.
  • Students need to check in with their teachers before leaving class.  Participation in rallies, choir practice, band setup, etc., is at the teacher’s discretion.
